[Saba Sports News] ‘Bazball’ has officially earned its place in the Collins Dictionary, thanks to its surging popularity among netizens. This word has transcended borders and become a global sensation in its usage.
The Collins dictionary defines Bazball as “a style of Test cricket in which the batting side attempts to gain the initiative by playing in a highly aggressive manner.”
The word, ‘Bazball’, was coined by Andrew Miller, who holds the position of ESPNCricinfo UK Editor, and it takes its name from the former New Zealand player and the current head coach of the England Test team, Brendon McCullum.
While the word is scheduled to be featured in the printed edition of the dictionary in 2024, it has already found its place in the esteemed publication’s online version.
McCullum introduced this style of play when he was appointed as the head honcho of England’s red-ball outfit in May 2022. Since then, England have won 13 out of 18 Test matches under his aggressive coaching stint.
However, last year when asked about how he feels when people say that England are Bazballing, McCullum stated, “I don’t really like that silly term that people are throwing out there.”
According to the report, the term ‘Bazball’ experienced a remarkable 400% surge in its usage from 2022 to 2023, and it was acknowledged by HarperCollins as one of the top 10 noteworthy new words of 2023.
