[Saba Sports News] Stephen Curry recently ignited a debate in the NBA by proclaiming himself the greatest point guard of all time, a statement that garnered a response from Magic Johnson. During an appearance on Gilbert Arenas’ show last month, Curry acknowledged his self-assessment while acknowledging Johnson’s impressive career achievements.
Curry stated, ‘Naturally, I have to respond in that manner. Yet, Magic’s track record is truly extraordinary. The fact that we’re even having this discussion is something I never anticipated.’
In an interview with CBS Sports Radio’s Zach Gelb, Johnson respectfully expressed his differing viewpoint. The legendary Los Angeles Lakers figure remarked, ‘Do the statistics bear that out, Zach? If he had more than five championships, more than three NBA Finals MVPs and three NBA MVPs, then he could be considered the greatest. If he held the top spot in all-time assists in the Finals, ranked second in double-doubles, held the first place in triple-doubles in playoff history, and stood fourth in steals in playoff history… if he had surpassed these benchmarks, he would be the best.’
Curry and Johnson played in different eras and possessed distinct playing styles, making direct comparisons challenging. It is widely accepted that Johnson was a superior playmaker, while Curry is renowned for his shooting prowess. As Magic noted, he also boasts more championship titles, a critical factor in evaluating players from different time periods.”
