[Saba Sports News] In a surprising development, seven students from Jammu & Kashmir were arrested following India’s defeat in the ODI World Cup final against Australia. The students were charged for allegedly raising anti-national and pro-Pakistani slogans after the match, which took place on November 19 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
These arrests were made under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), carrying potential penalties of imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both. The action was taken after another student filed a complaint against the seven for celebrating India’s loss and showing support for Australia and Pakistan.
The case, which has also captured political attention, was based on video evidence showing the students chanting anti-India slogans. According to Reuters, a police official stated that the students are from an agricultural university in the border state.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed dismay over the arrests, criticizing the criminalization of cheering for a winning team. The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, had an impressive run in the World Cup, remaining unbeaten until the final and defeating the five-time champions in Chennai before their defeat in Ahmedabad. This loss, ending their 10-game winning streak, was a disappointment for Indian cricket fans, marking India as the runner-up in the 2023 edition.
