[Saba Sports News] In what is coming as a massive development, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are planning to release England all-rounder Ben Stokes ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction.
Stokes had participated in only two IPL matches last season after CSK bagged his services in a mini auction for Rs 16.25 crore. He is ready to operate on his troubled left knee, meaning that his participation in IPL 2024 is doubtful.
As reported by Cricbuzz, Stokes is set to be released for the same reason as CSK do not want take any risk with the heavy amount that they have invested in him.
“We would not consider releasing Stokes if he could be available because he is a big match player and we hold him in the highest regard. But if he can’t make it to the season, we will have blocked Rs 16 crore with which we could acquire some quality players” a CSK official said as quoted to Cricbuzz.
Despite not using Stokes enough in IPL 2023, CSK still lifted their fifth trophy under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
In more IPL rumours, it is also being reported that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) could release Lockie Ferguson due to his injury issues. Ferguson was trade to KKR from Gujarat Titans leading up to IPL 2023.
Notably, all the IPL franchises are required to submit the list of their retained and released players by November 26. A mini auction will then take place at the Coco Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19.
