During a World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh, umpire Richard Kettleborough’s missed wide call helped Virat Kohli reach his century.
However, in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, the roles reversed, and Kettleborough’s decision cost Kohli his wicket.
Batting on 17, Kohli was trapped lbw by Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s fuller delivery. Kettleborough promptly upheld Bangladesh’s appeal, and after a brief chat with Shubman Gill, Kohli chose not to review. Later, UltraEdge revealed a spike, showing the ball had hit the bat. The Indian dressing room, especially captain Rohit Sharma, was visibly upset as a DRS review would have overturned the decision.
India, after scoring 376 in their first innings, bowled Bangladesh out for 149, securing a 227-run lead. Opting not to enforce the follow-on, India pushed their advantage. Despite losing wickets, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma started aggressively, and at Stumps on Day 2, India led by 308, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 33 and 12, respectively. Ravindra Jadeja commented after play, “We need 120-150 more runs to be in a good position and then bowl them out quickly.”
