MS Dhoni, often celebrated for his calm and composed nature on the field, has a rarely seen fiery side, according to former CSK fast bowler Mohit Sharma. In a candid chat on the ‘2 Sloggers’ podcast, Mohit shared instances when the legendary captain lost his cool.
Despite his calm image, Dhoni—who boasts three ICC titles and five IPL trophies—has had moments of frustration behind the scenes. Mohit, who played 58 matches for CSK and 26 international games under Dhoni, explained, “We’ve received a lot of abuses from him. But he always says, ‘What happens on the field, stays there.’ Later, he’ll calmly explain things and never stay angry.”
Mohit revealed that Dhoni’s rare outbursts were often triggered by lapses in concentration. “As a fast bowler, you tend to lose focus sometimes. If you’re distracted or not paying attention to his signals, you might face the heat. I’ve copped flak for that a few times,” he said.
Mohit also recalled an incident involving Deepak Chahar in 2019, where Dhoni lost his patience after Chahar disobeyed his instructions. “Deepak Chahar has also received a lot of abuses. In 2019, during a match in Chennai, Dhoni bhai told him not to bowl a knuckleball. Chahar agreed, but a couple of deliveries later, he bowled it again, and it went over the batter’s head. Dhoni was frustrated.”
With the IPL 2025 auction on the horizon, there is speculation about Dhoni’s future, though reports suggest CSK plans to retain him under BCCI’s new retention policy.
