Kylian Mbappe is a serious doubt to take part in the high-stakes Madrid Derby over the weekend.
Mbappe sustained the injury in their nervy 3-2 win over struggling Alaves. The Frenchman was one of the scorers in the game as well. However, he was subbed off in the 80th minute as he pointed towards his thigh while indicating to be subbed off.
The Frenchman has had a productive start to life at the Spanish capital after his move from Paris St-Germain. He has scored 7 goals so far in all appearances for the club in all competitions. He seems to have struck a good understanding with the other members of the side. Most notably Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.
“Following tests carried out today on Kylian Mbappe. He has been diagnosed with an injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg,” read a club statement. “His progress will be under supervision.” Spanish media reports that the France captain will be out of Sunday’s trip to the Metropolitano.
Talking about the match against Alaves, Real Madrid defeated Alavés 3-2 at home with to goals from Lucas Vázquez, Kylian Mbappe, and Rodrygo, despite a late scare. Real Madrid prevailed in a contest that they had mostly controlled despite goals by Carlos Benavídez and Kike García for Alavés in the 88th and 89th minutes.
A little more than a minute after kickoff, Real opened the score through a long pass from Federico Valverde to Vinícius Júnior, who sprinted up the left channel and set up Vázquez, who scored from close range.
In the 40th minute, Mbappe and Jude Bellingham executed a deft one-two before Mbappe cut inside and finished neatly to the right of the custodian to increase their lead.
Three minutes after the half, Rodrygo scored his third goal. It was a swift counterattack by shooting low beneath Antonio Sivera’s legs to give the reigning champions a comfortable lead.
But Benavídez and García both took advantage of some shoddy defence to bring the visitors back into the game. However, their rally was too late to keep Real Madrid from winning all three points.
