Sunil Chhetri becomes top goal-scorer in ISL history after his latest goal for FC Bengaluru at the Kanteerava stadium.
Sunil Chhetri added another accomplishment to his illustrious career. He becomes the all-time leading goalscorer in the Indian Super League (ISL), the country’s top-tier football competition.
At the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Saturday, the veteran, who was level with Bartholomew Ogbeche on 63 goals, scored his 64th ISL goal from the penalty spot to help Bengaluru FC defeat Mohun Bagan SG, the reigning ISL champions, 3-0.
According to an ISL news release, the penalty marked the 40-year-old’s 57th ISL goal for Bengaluru FC. He had previously scored seven goals for Mumbai City FC in the league while playing for the Islanders in the 2015 and 2016 campaigns.
Chhetri, who declared his retirement from the game in June of this year, has been a productive player for his team and scored his third goal of the 2024–25 campaign. In the ISL, where he has frequently played during his career, he now tops the goal statistics.
Speaking to ISL Media following the match, Chhetri diverted attention from his achievement while celebrating a significant victory.
“I am really happy to win the game. Whatever goals I have scored are because of the team I have played with. It has been a long journey with Bengaluru FC in the ISL. But I am just happy that we won the game. When the season ends, we will see how many goals I get. But for now, it is all about three points,” he said.
The Blues’ ISL campaign is off to its greatest start ever. With nine points from three games—seven goals and zero goals conceded—they are atop the standings. On Wednesday, the Blues will play their first away game of the season when they visit the Mumbai Football Arena to play Mumbai City FC, the reigning ISL Cup winners.
