Cameron Green is a serious doubt for the India series as conversations arise on a potential surgery for his back injury.
Cameron Green faces a literal race against time as his injury has put forth a real stickler in Australia’s plans for the India series.
Green was initially earmarked for the 5-test series as a pure batter due to back soreness in the England tour. Latest reports have emerged which have put paid to almost all hope of Green being a part of the series.
The Australian board along with its medical team are contemplating all options with regards to the injury. Surgery is also one of the measures which is under consideration.
Green has a history of back ailments over the years. He has been subject to 4 stress fractures in his career. His last one came way back in 2019.
He would be sidelined for the duration of the summer if surgery is chosen as the course of action. It’s possible that he may play cricket this summer as a batter only if a non-surgical recovery plan is followed. It’s unclear when he would be available.
Due to Green’s absence from the series, Australia would be able to rearrange the batting order. This will allow Steven Smith to take his place at No. 4. On Sunday, October 28, when New South Wales plays Victoria at the MCG in the Sheffield Shield, he will likely reveal his batting position for the series.
In the event that Green is ruled out and Smith advances to the fourth spot, Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Matt Renshaw—all of whom were in the running until Smith raised his hand to open—could be selected as the opener from Shield cricket.
Harris struck 143 for Victoria against Tasmania to start the Shield season on a quiet surface at the Junction Oval. Beau Webster, an all-rounder from Tasmania, had also hit a century. In the opening inning of Western Australia vs Queensland at the WACA ground, Bancroft and Renshaw both scored poorly.
