Gareth Southgate on his immediate future in football as he looks to take time off post an 8-year spell as England boss.
Gareth Southgate iterates that his immediate future in football lies away from the game.
The former England boss recently stepped down after 8 years in charge of the English national team. While they managed to make deep runs in each of the tournaments under Southgate, silverware eluded them.
They made the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, back-to-back Euro finals in 2021 and 2024, and a quarter-final in the Qatar World Cup in 2022.
Southgate currently finds himself linked with the Manchester United job with Ineos reported to favor him. Current manager Erik Ten Hag is under huge pressure and his future seems uncertain at best.
The 54-year-old has however put those murmurs to rest saying he will not be managing anytime soon.
“I won’t coach in the next year for sure, I’m certain of that,” he said. “I need to give myself time to make good decisions.
“When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.
“I’m enjoying my life, so there’s no rush.”
“I’m fortunate that there are lots of different opportunities that are presenting themselves. The business side of football is really interesting,” said Southgate.
“I’ve been invited to speak at Harvard and there’s lots of exciting life experiences to have.
“I’m 54 and want to enjoy and be really motivated for the next 10 to 15 years of my life and the most important thing is to give myself time to make good decisions.”
Southgate makes it very clear that he will not be managing an international team. He will assess his options very carefully before stepping back into club management. His last role as a club manager was way back in 2006 when he was in charge of Middlesbrough.
