Hugo Viana to be appointed as new Man City sporting director, replacing the outgoing Txiki Begiristain in the role.
Hugo Viana, the current Sporting Lisbon DoF is set to be appointed as the new Man City sporting director.
Early in the upcoming season, the Premier League winners will welcome the former midfield player from Newcastle and Portugal. Before Begiristain assumes the position at the end of this season, Viana will work with him for a considerable amount of time, according to City’s plans.
After learning that Begiristain would be leaving City after 12 years of service, the team launched a thorough search for a replacement. Throughout his six-year tenure with Sporting, Viana helped the team win two Primeira Liga titles. This has earned him a lot of plaudits for his efforts. Viana is renowned for finding young, gifted players all across the world. In recent summers, he has managed the sales of Manuel Ugarte, Matheus Nunes, and Nuno Mendes.
In addition, the 41-year-old former midfield player claims responsibility for luring Rúben Amorim from Braga to the Portuguese city. The head coach had only been at Braga for a brief while. Viana believed he could bring Sporting into a new era. Amorim has done just that, leading the team to two league titles and two Portuguese cups in addition to making an impression with his style of play both at home and in Europe.
While Viana played for Sporting and Valencia and enjoyed success, his tenure at St. James’ Park was essentially unmemorable. Upon retirement, he held the position of sporting director at Belenenses after earning 29 caps for his country. He later returned to his childhood club in the same role.
November’s Champions League group stage matchup between Sporting and City, who are awaiting the resolution of Pep Guardiola’s situation before his contract expires in the summer, will pit Viana against his prospective employers.
