Prithvi Shaw dropped by Mumbai for their next Ranji Trophy fixture as further problems emerge with respect to discipline.
Prithvi Shaw once again finds himself in trouble as the MCA have dropped him from Mumbai’s squad to face Tripura in the Ranji Trophy.
This is another instance in a long line of disciplinary issues for the 24-year-old, who was touted to be India’s next big thing when he burst on to the scene.
The MCA has not exactly given a clear reason for his omission. Insiders, however, reveal that this is a veiled warning by the defending champions to the batter to get his affairs in order quickly.
Shaw has not enjoyed the greatest of starts to this Ranji campaign. He has scores of 7, 12, 1, and 39 not out in the 4 innings he has batted.
This is believed to be a long time coming for Shaw. The first observation made was that he is overweight, which was a major red flag with regards to fitness. Another major factor in his ouster was that he was constantly skipping practice sessions.
This was said to be a major problem. Other senior players and India players like Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Ajinkya Rahane attended net sessions religiously. The same could not be said for Shaw, who was alleged to have skipped two sessions for every one attended.
Shaw is thought to have been benched for at least one game by the Mumbai selection committee. It consists of Vikrant Yeligeti, Jeetendra Thackeray, Ravi Thaker, Kiran Powar, and Sanjay Patil (chairman).
Although it is too soon to tell if he will be called up for the upcoming match, the team management and selectors think that the opening, who has reportedly been inconsistent at practice and nets, might learn a lesson from his exclusion.
Shaw is overweight, according to the Mumbai squad’s braintrust, which is made up of selectors and team management. It has also been observed that he attends net practice sessions sporadically and does not take them seriously.
A top MCA source said that the team administration, which includes the coach and captain, and the selectors all agreed that Shaw should not be included in the roster.
Shaw has participated in one Twenty20 International, six ODIs, and five Test matches. In his first Test match against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018, he scored a century and was named Man of the Match. However, his career has taken a nosedive due to non-cricket related off-field incidents.
In the two games so far in the season, Mumbai have won outright one and lost one, outright. Mumbai play Tripura from October 26 to 29 at MBB stadium in Agartala in their next game.
