India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate recently expressed his confidence in Mohammed Siraj, despite the bowler coming under scrutiny following an underwhelming performance during the first Test against New Zealand in October 2024. In a high-stakes situation, where India faced an eight-wicket loss in the first match, Siraj’s inability to make a significant impact, especially in the second innings, raised concerns among fans and analysts. Yet, ten Doeschate remains optimistic about Siraj’s abilities, indicating that the pacer is simply going through a dry patch and will soon find his rhythm again.
Siraj, known for his lethal outswingers and pace, managed only two wickets in the entire match. His struggles in the second innings were particularly worrying, as the New Zealand batsmen, chasing a modest target of 107 runs, found little trouble scoring against him. Siraj’s form has been inconsistent in recent times, with a concerning record of no second-innings wickets in the last seven Test matches. This streak prompted many to question his place in the team ahead of the crucial second Test.
However, ten Doeschate highlighted Siraj’s “beautiful” bowling during a brief but intense phase on the final morning of the first Test. He emphasized that Siraj’s rhythm remains intact and his deliveries are still of high quality, but the conditions in Bengaluru did not favor his strengths. Particularly, Siraj’s ability to move the ball away from left-handers was not fully effective on a surface that didn’t provide much assistance for seamers. The assistant coach stressed that there is no reason to worry and that Siraj is expected to bounce back in the upcoming matches. Ten Doeschate also pointed out the need for India’s bowlers to adjust to conditions better, acknowledging that while the first innings saw difficult seaming conditions, there will be other opportunities where India’s pacers, including Siraj, can capitalize on favorable circumstances.
In addition to addressing concerns around Siraj, ten Doeschate also explained the somewhat surprising inclusion of Washington Sundar in the Test squad. Sundar, predominantly known for his white-ball skills, was added as a spin-bowling all-rounder for the series against New Zealand. This decision raised eyebrows, considering India already boasts a strong spin attack featuring Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel. Sundar’s selection seemed redundant to some, given the depth in the spin department.
However, ten Doeschate clarified that Sundar’s inclusion was not a “desperate measure” but a strategic one. The assistant coach explained that Sundar brings the added advantage of bowling off-spin, which turns away from left-handers. New Zealand’s lineup includes several left-handed batsmen, and India wanted an option to exploit that weakness. Furthermore, Sundar’s consistent performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ranji Trophy, played a key role in his selection. Ten Doeschate emphasized that rewarding domestic success is an essential part of India’s strategy, aiming to send a positive message to all aspiring cricketers in the country.
India is now in a do-or-die situation as they prepare for the second Test, set to take place in Pune. With the team trailing 0-1 in the three-match series, a victory in the next match is crucial to keep their hopes alive. As Siraj works to regain his form and Sundar potentially steps in to provide another spin option, the team will be looking for an all-around performance to bounce back from the disappointment of the first Test.
The decision to back Siraj and bring in Sundar reflects India’s larger plan to build a strong core of players who can perform under varying conditions. Ten Doeschate has emphasized the importance of keeping players in a mentally safe zone, allowing them to develop confidence and perform at their best. This philosophy underscores India’s broader approach to team selection and management under current leadership.
As the second Test approaches, all eyes will be on Siraj’s performance, as well as the role Washington Sundar might play if given the opportunity. India’s hopes of leveling the series depend on a collective team effort, and the management’s belief in their squad will be critical in the high-pressure environment.
