New Man United manager Amorim wants to ‘prove something’ after agreeing deal to become new Red Devils’ manager.
New Man United manager Rúben Amorim says he has to “prove something” after agreeing to become Manchester United’s head coach.
At a news conference on Thursday, Amorim largely sidestepped concerns about his future by claiming that while he did want to destabilise the team, the “soap opera” surrounding him will soon come to an end and that everyone would have clarity following Sporting’s match against Estrela da Amadora on Friday.
The 39-year-old’s €10 million (£8.3 million) release fee and roughly €1 million to shorten his 30-day notice period are being paid by United. Amorim will stay with Sporting for their next three games, which include Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Manchester City. On November 24, he will play his first United game when they go to Ipswich.
Amorim added that despite the hazards, he and his assistants—five of whom are anticipated to accompany him—felt compelled to accept the task.
“Something is missing, we want to prove something and we have to take a step forward,” he said. “We don’t know if we’re ruining what we have. Everyone feels this and coaches go through the same thing.”
Before passing over to the Portuguese, Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as United’s interim head coach for three more home games: against Chelsea on Sunday, Paok on Thursday, and Leicester on November 10. He has stated that he is open to working for Amorim.
After firing Erik ten Hag on Monday, United has acted swiftly to entice Amorim. Omar Berrada, the CEO, and Dan Ashworth, the sporting director, have been in Lisbon to finalise the contract by negotiating with Sporting’s management.
“It is a negotiation between two clubs,” Amorim said. “It is never easy, even with the clauses, it is never easy – they have to talk. We will have clarification after the game – it will be very clear. It is one more day. After the game tomorrow, we will have the decision made.”
As a sign of respect for Sporting, who are about to promote João Pereira, the head coach of the B team, to succeed him, Amorim did not want to push his departure.
Although the specifics of their remuneration have not yet been decided. Amorim is expected to bring the coaches Emanuel Ferro, Adélio Cândido, and Carlos Fernandes, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital. And sports scientist Paulo Barreira to United.
“The situation is very difficult,” Amorim said. “I’m not saying there’s nervousness, but there’s tiredness. When I don’t know what to say, everything becomes more difficult, since it’s much easier when I’m direct. But it’s more tiredness, which makes me more nervous in this situation. Everything around the situation makes me very nervous – it’s difficult to focus on the games – but the soap opera is ending.”
