On the second day of India’s mock training match at the WACA, Shubman Gill injured his hand while fielding, adding to the uncertainty surrounding India’s batting order for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth.
While fielding in slips, Gill injured his left hand and missed the remainder of the day. The injury’s potential to jeopardise Gill’s selection for the first Test match, which begins on November 22 at the Optus stadium in Perth, was not verified.
While Rohit Sharma is doubtful for the first Test due to the birth of his second child, Gill has been batting at number three but has also been considered as a possibility for the opening position alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The Indian camp was pleased to learn that Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh gave birth to their second child on Friday, as it anxiously awaits a proper evaluation of Gill’s injuries. Rohit had informed the BCCI and selectors that he might not be available for the series opener because of the approaching deadline date for the Perth Test.
It has been reported that Rohit even contemplated going to Australia to train with the team and then returning for the birth of the child after India’s recent 3-0 thrashing at the hands of New Zealand. But in the end, he remained at home. Whether he will now fly to Perth to be available for the first Test could not be guaranteed.
An additional opening choice, KL On the first day of the simulation, Rahul had fled the pitch after a short ball had hit him in the elbow. Later in the day, when India’s top batsmen had another opportunity at the crease, he did not come out to bat. Rahul was also absent from the pitch on Saturday.
