Gerardo Martino leaves manager role at Inter Miami despite leading the club to a record season in the MLS last season.
Gerardo Martino has resigned as the head coach of Inter Miami, citing personal reasons.
Inter Miami lost in the MLS Cup playoffs, despite Martino leading the Lionel Messi-led team to an MLS record 74 points (22-4-8) and the Supporters’ Shield during the regular season. The team lost to Atlanta United, the ninth seed, in the opening round.
Martino and Inter Miami management are likely to address during a news conference the club has set for Friday.
After leading Mexico’s national team for more than three years, Martino, 61, joined Inter Miami in June 2023. After Mexico lost in the 2022 World Cup group stage for the first time in almost 45 years, he resigned from that position.
Following the signing of Martino and superstars Messi and Sergio Busquets that summer, Inter Miami were victorious in the Leagues Cup 2023 competition.
Martino, an Argentinean native, previously guided Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup championship. After that season, claiming personal reasons once more, he decided not to extend his contract.
