Romania given the 3-0 win after Kosovo walk-out in n the UEFA Nations League match between the two teams on Saturday.
Romania has been awarded a 3-0 win by UEFA. Following their Nations League match in Bucharest on Saturday, opponents Kosovo left the pitch in protest of what they said was discriminatory shouting by the home crowd.
However, Romania’s fans’ racist and/or discriminatory actions, including xenophobic anti-Hungarian shouts, have resulted in an order to play their next game behind closed doors.
The Kosovan Football Federation (FFK) later accused the home supporters of “offensive and provocative actions,” including cries of “Kosovo is Serbia,” after the Kosovo players fled the pitch with seconds left at 0-0.
According to the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), “no racist chants during the match” were heard.
Despite not mentioning Serbia in its disciplinary ruling, Uefa fined Romania 128,000 euros (£106,000) for the chanting and other violations, including as “transmitting provocative political messages not fit for a sports event” and interfering with the national anthem.
Following their games, the two teams have now been disciplined three times in recent years.
Following offensive chanting by a segment of Romanian supporters during a Euro 2024 qualifying match in September 2023, Uefa fined the FRF 40,000 euros (£33,400) and mandated that Romania’s next home match be played behind closed doors.
Last month, Uefa punished the FFK 61,000 euros (£50,900) for misbehaviour by fans during a September Nations League encounter.
After years of tense ties between its Serb and primarily Albanian residents. Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008.
In response to Kosovo’s desire for independence following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Serbia launched a violent crackdown against ethnic Albanians. This came to an end in 1999 following a NATO bombing campaign against Serbia.
While Romania and Serbia do not recognise Kosovo’s independence, 100 nations, including the United Kingdom, do.
In FIFA and Uefa competitions, Kosovo and Serbia are always kept apart.
