Alex Greenwood facing long layoff after knee surgery in blow to Manchester City.
Manchester City skipper Alex Greenwood is expected to miss a significant amount of time due to knee surgery. During the Women’s Champions League victory over Austrian team St Pölten in December, the England defender suffered a medial collateral ligament injury.
Lionesses supporters will be worried about the European Championship, which begins in Switzerland on July 2, even if the club has not disclosed a timeline for the 31-year-old’s rehabilitation.
Greenwood has been playing well for City, who are now in second place in the WSL, and was an important member of the starting England team that advanced to the 2023 World Cup final.
In her absence, City was soundly defeated by Barcelona on Wednesday and lost to Everton on Sunday in the WSL. Other important, injured first-team regulars including Vivianne Miedema, Lauren Hemp, and Khadija Shaw are also sidelined for Gareth Taylor’s club.
A club statement said: “Manchester City can confirm that Alex Greenwood has had successful surgery on a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. Our captain was stretchered off in the Blues’ 2-0 Uefa Women’s Champions League win over St Pölten at the Joie Stadium.
“The defender has since undergone a repair of her MCL and will now return to the City Football Academy to work closely with the club’s medical team. Everyone at Manchester City would like to wish Alex a full and speedy recovery.”
