Following Australia’s impressive 184-run victory over India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), attention has shifted to the fitness of key fast bowler Mitchell Starc as the team prepares for the upcoming Sydney Test. Captain Pat Cummins has expressed confidence in Starc’s ability to overcome recent injury concerns and be ready for the crucial match.
During the MCG Test, Starc was observed clutching his torso and receiving treatment for rib soreness. Despite the discomfort, he delivered a commendable performance, maintaining speeds above 140 km/h and securing the pivotal wicket of Virat Kohli. Pat Cummins praised Starc’s resilience, stating, “He’s a warrior. He never even contemplates not being an option to bowl.”
Addressing concerns about Starc’s availability for the Sydney Test, Pat Cummins remained optimistic: “I’m pretty confident he’ll be fine. We’ll reassess in a couple of days. Other than being in pain, he’s fully fit and available.”
Head coach Andrew McDonald echoed Cummins’ sentiments, acknowledging Starc’s discomfort but highlighting his determination: “Clearly, there was a little bit of discomfort early on in spells, but once he got warm, it seems as though he was pretty free.”
The upcoming Sydney Test holds significant importance for Australia. A draw would suffice to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India and secure a spot in the World Test Championship final. Starc’s presence is deemed vital, especially considering the absence of fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood due to a calf injury. In the event that Starc is unable to play, potential replacements include Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott.
The Australian team’s recent success has been bolstered by the durability of its pace attack. However, the quick turnaround between matches poses a challenge for players’ recovery. Cummins emphasized the importance of rest and recuperation, noting that some players might opt for “water and some protein shakes and an early night” to prepare for the next game.
As the team looks ahead to the Sydney Test, the focus remains on maintaining momentum and ensuring player fitness. Starc’s potential participation is a positive sign for Australia’s bowling lineup, aiming to continue their strong performance and achieve their objectives in the series.
