Trevoh Chalobah recalled from Palace loan by Chelsea as injury crisis leaves them severely short on centre-backs.
Trevoh Chalobah has been recalled by Chelsea following a termination of his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
The terminaton was possible because of a recall clause in the defender’s deal. The move has come in response to Enzo Maresca losing Benoît Badiashile and Wesley Fofana to hamstring injuries.
Since Fofana is not anticipated to return anytime soon, Chelsea has made the decision to increase its alternatives by bringing Chalobah back to the team. After being informed that he was not a part of Chelsea’s long-term plans, Chalobah was left out in the cold last summer. He found a new challenge when he signed a season-long loan with Palace.
Chalobah, a graduate of the club’s academy, was among a group that trained apart from the first squad and was excluded from Chelsea’s preseason tour last summer. He was happy at Palace, according to sources. Chelsea, nevertheless, who have lost their previous five league games, think Chalobah can handle Maresca’s style of possession. Maresca has been selecting between Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Josh Acheampong since Fofana and Badiashile are not available. After being on loan at Boca Juniors, Aaron Anselmino has been called back.
Chelsea has thought about attempting to sign Marc Guéhi of Palace, another former player, but it is easier to turn to Chalobah. Chalobah, who has performed admirably for Palace, can play both right and centre back. Palace will try to use Chris Richards and Chadi Riad to cover the defensive gap.
Disasi was left out of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday night and is for sale this month. Borussia Dortmund wants Carney Chukwuemeka and Renato Veiga, while Bayern Munich is attempting to sign France attacker Christopher Nkunku.
