Injury crisis mounts for South Africa ahead of the Champions Trophy as Gerald Coetzee suffers hamstring niggle.
Injury crisis has further depleted South Africa’s bowling reserves. Gerald Coetzee, who was expected to be named as Anrich Nortje’s replacement in the the Champions Trophy squad, was left out of the Joburg Super Kings XI to play Pretoria Capitals in the SA20.
Coetzee’s participation in the SA20 is uncertain for the upcoming weeks due to a hamstring injury. They are keeping a careful eye on his level of fitness.
Although Coetzee had just recovered from an injury, no formal explanation was provided for his withdrawal. He was supposed to be in the starting lineup on a pitch that played to his pace-bowling talents.

In his first competitive match since the Test match against Sri Lanka in Durban, where he suffered a groin injury, Coetzee participated in JSK’s final game against the Super Giants of Durban at Kingsmead. After recovering from a 12-week conditioning block and a hip niggle, Coetzee was ruled out for the remainder of the international summer.
Between a domestic match for the Titans in October and a match at the MLC in July (his only match in the competition), he did not play any cricket. He then played in all four of South Africa’s Twenty20 International matches against India, looking faster and more fit than before. He took 4 for 85 in the opening Test match against Sri Lanka before being sidelined once more.
Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, also revealed that Coetzee was eligible for a Champions Trophy spot but was passed over in favour of the more seasoned Nortje. Given that Nortje is now out due to a back issue, Coetzee is anticipated to travel to Pakistan if healthy. Walter, who is the team’s only selector, will have to sift through the reserves if he is unable to.
