Nuri Sahin loses Dortmund job after losing 4 straight games in a row following the latest defeat against Bologna.
Nuri Sahin has been sacked as coach of Borussia Dortmund following their dismal loss to Bologna in the Champions League.
The team is currently in 10th place in the Bundesliga, 20 points behind champions Bayern Munich, and 13th place in the Champions League, where they advanced to the final last season.
After Edin Terzic left Dortmund, where Sahin had been an assistant coach, Sahin was named head coach in the summer. The team has only won one of their last nine games after the loss to Bologna, which was their fourth straight loss.
“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” Sahin said in a statement published by the club confirming his departure. “I wish this special club all the best.”
The sporting director, Lars Ricken, said Dortmund had “lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals” under Sahin. “This decision hurts me personally,” Ricken said, “but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”
Dortmund led Bologna in the fifteenth minute but lost for the third time in seven Champions League games after giving up two goals in the second half.
Sahin started off with Dortmund as a player and played for the team for two stints, totalling over 250 matches. He managed Antalyaspor, a Turkish team, for more than two years before coming back to Dortmund to coach.
