Stanway undergoes surgery in huge blow to Lionesses before Euro 2025 leading to her being out for ‘several months’.
Stanway has knee operation for lateral collateral ligament injury in blow to Lionesses before Euro 2025.
On Thursday, Bayern Munich confirmed that the 26-year-old had surgery on her knee. Stanway’s fitness to return before the season ends and if the injury will prevent her from competing in the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland in July are yet unknown.
The announcement coincides with the absence of several other key Lionesses players due to serious knee injuries. Lauren Hemp, a winger for Manchester City, is expected to return soon, while Alex Greenwood, a centre-back for Manchester City, is more seriously injured and has an uncertain return date. In December, Greenwood had surgery to repair an injury to his medial collateral ligament (MCL).
Throughout Sarina Wiegman’s tenure, Stanway has been a consistent starter for the Lionesses. He was a vital member of the team that won the 2022 Euros and again formed the backbone of the squad that advanced to the 2023 World Cup final. As she works to get her team ready to defend their European crown this summer, Wiegman will be more concerned about her injury.
Additionally, her injury hurts Bayern Munich’s chances of winning the Women’s Champions League. The draw for the quarterfinals, which the German team has advanced to, will take place on February 7.
“FC Bayern Women midfielder Georgia Stanway suffered a lateral collateral ligament tear in her right knee in training at the start of the week. The 26-year-old England international had an operation on Wednesday and will now be out for several months,” the club confirmed.
