CSK head coach laments poor fielding display against Punjab as his team continues to slip away from the pack.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has urged his side to massively improve their fielding standards.
In what is turning out to be a pretty woeful season for the men in yellow, CSK suffered their fourth loss on the trot after losing to Punjab Kings by 18 runs.
It was more of the same mistakes that have plagued them this season. Poor bowling, coupled with their ineffective approach with the bat. However, what was a shocker to see was their unusually poor fielding.
For a team that has been renowned for their ground fielding as well as their effectiveness in catching, it was a woeful night. In all, Chennai fielders contrived to drop 5 catches in the field.
Priyansh Arya was dropped twice on 6 and 73, while Shashank Singh also was dropped on 38. Punjab Kings did not need any second invitations to punish CSK mistakes. Arya went on to score 103 while Shashank helped himself to 52. Punjab eventually scored 219, which proved to be 18 runs too many.
Fleming’s two cents.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming did not mince his words as he summed up his side’s nightmare performance in the field. He believed that his side lost the game because of their shabby fielding.
“The game was really lost in the field, I thought we were sloppy in the field, and we just lacked accuracy under pressure at certain times,” Fleming said. “We were put under pressure by a fine innings [from Arya] but we’ve got to be better than that in terms of shutting it down. So that’s where the game got away from us.
“We’re 18 runs short in a big run chase, so we can look at three sixes here and there. It’s been a frustrating season so far. The catching has been poor, but it was poor from both sides tonight. Whether it was something in the light I’m not sure, but certainly for us that was an area of concern.”
