5 Prem teams to qualify for next season’s Champions League after Arsenal’s statement victory over Real Madrid.
5 Prem teams will officially qualify for the Champions League next season.
To earn one of the two additional berths—on top of the four given to the top four in the table—awarded to the top-ranked nations in the Uefa coefficient table, the English top flight needs one victory from its clubs in any of the three European competitions.
Teams in the European competition receive extra points for moving on to the next round and points for winning or drawing, which is how the coefficient is determined. After that, scores are averaged based on how many teams from a particular nation began the season in Europe.
If Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur win the Europa League and Aston Villa wins this year’s competition without qualifying through the Premier League table, England will have seven teams in the Champions League.
Germany and Spain are in third and fourth place, respectively, while Italy is leading the race for the second extra spot.
Two of the five guaranteed spots appear to be going to the Premier League leaders, Liverpool, and second-place Arsenal, while Nottingham Forest is in a solid third place.
