Mumbai T20 league former franchise co-owner banned for corruption charges.
Gurmeet Singh Bhamrah, the former co-owner of a Mumbai T20 League team, has been banned by BCCI ombudsman Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra for corruptly approaching players Bhavin Thakkar and Dhawal Kulkarni during the 2019 season.
Bhamrah, who also participated in the Global T20 Canada, is no longer with the Mumbai T20 League, which is being resurrected this year after being suspended by COVID after the 2019 tournament. The SoBo Supersonics were co-owned by him.
The duration of the suspension is not specified in the order copy, but according to the BCCI’s anti-corruption code, it could range from five years to life.
According to the order document, at Bhamrah’s request, a man by the name of Sonu Vasan approached Thakkar to arrange matches.
The order just notes that Kulkarni’s “statement was recorded by the ACU” and makes no reference of the nature of the approach made to the former India cricket player, who retired from the game after winning the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai in March 2024.
“Transcript of the conversation shows that Sonu Vasan offered money and other benefits to Bhavin Thakkar at the behest of the respondent. Upon meriting the entire offer that he made on behalf of the respondent, Sonu Vasan told Bhavin Thakkar whatever call Thakkar wishes to take in the matter, Vasan would relay it back to the respondent.”
