Saints wish to appoint Will Still as head coach before Arsenal game.
Will Still’s appointment as Southampton’s head coach is being expedited. Saints hope the 32-year-old will be present at their Sunday match against Arsenal if they make enough progress in the next few days. Still, who was born to English parents in Belgium, departed Lens, a Ligue 1 team, last week, stating that he wanted to be nearer to his family in England for personal reasons.
During an internship for a college course, he began coaching at Preston’s academy. However, he has worked in Belgium and France throughout his professional career, including at Sint-Truiden, Beerschot, Lierse, and Reims.
While Simon Rusk, the first-team coach and former Under-21s coach, has been guiding Southampton temporarily, Johannes Spors, the technical director, has been spearheading the hunt for Ivan Juric’s replacement.
Saints have avoided the shame of falling short of Derby’s record-low Premier League point total, but they still play Arsenal in their final match of a terrible season.
Still is seen as a very promising coach and a possibly interesting addition. It is still to be decided how much Lens will pay his employees. The manager of Sheffield Wednesday and former Saints assistant Danny Röhl, whom Spors knows from their time at RB Leipzig but did not work closely with, is one of the people on Southampton’s list.
When Saints fired Russell Martin in December of last year, they considered hiring Röhl. After nearly two years in the position, the 36-year-old is now set to quit Hillsborough due to heavy interest from Bundesliga clubs.
