Mohammed Shami’s absence from India’s Test squad for the upcoming series against England has raised eyebrows among cricket fans and experts. As one of India’s most experienced and dependable pace bowlers in red-ball cricket, his exclusion came as a surprise. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has now provided a clear explanation behind the decision to omit Shami from the squad.
According to Agarkar, the decision was based entirely on Shami’s current fitness status. The veteran fast bowler is still recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action since late 2023. Although he has made commendable efforts toward rehabilitation, recent medical evaluations indicated that he is not yet fully fit to participate in a demanding five-Test series. Agarkar confirmed that team doctors and medical staff advised against including Shami as his body hasn’t yet reached the level of readiness required for Test cricket.
Shami had previously undergone surgery and has been undergoing physiotherapy and strength training as part of his recovery plan. While his return to international cricket in white-ball formats was anticipated earlier in the year, his progress has been slower than expected. The selectors, in consultation with the medical team, have opted to give him more time to complete his recovery rather than rush him back and risk aggravating the injury.
Ajit Agarkar stated that Shami had been trying to push himself to get fit in time for the England series, but a recent setback in training forced the selectors to make a cautious call. The long nature of the series, which will span across challenging English conditions, requires bowlers to be at peak physical form. In such a scenario, bringing back a player with incomplete fitness could have had long-term consequences, both for the individual and the team.
The Indian selection committee has instead chosen to go ahead with other pace options who are currently fit and in rhythm. The squad includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and emerging talents such as Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. While these players bring their own strengths to the table, the absence of someone with Shami’s experience and match-winning ability is bound to be felt, especially in conditions where seam and swing play a major role.
Despite this setback, Ajit Agarkar assured that Shami remains an integral part of India’s Test plans. His exclusion is temporary and purely precautionary. The selectors are optimistic that with proper rest and continued rehab, Shami will be back to full fitness soon and available for future assignments, including the next cycle of the World Test Championship and important away tours later in the year.
As India prepares for one of its toughest overseas assignments, the focus now shifts to the younger bowlers stepping up and filling the void. It will also test the team’s depth in the fast bowling department. Meanwhile, Shami’s fans will be hoping to see him return soon, as his ability to dismantle batting lineups with pace and precision is unmatched on his day. For now, though, recovery remains the priority, and the team moves forward with a vision for the future, backed by fitness, form, and long-term planning.
