Aminul Islam is appointed as new BCB president as he takes charge in what are turbulent times for the board.
Aminul Islam has been elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after a board meeting in Dhaka on Friday.
Former Bangladesh captain Aminul was the team’s first Test centurion in 2000 and captained them at the 1999 World Cup.
Aminul’s rise occurs less than twenty-four hours after Faruque’s tenure as board president was essentially terminated when he was removed from his position as the sports ministry’s representative on the board of directors.
Eight BCB directors filed a motion of no-confidence against Faruque, prompting the sports ministry to make the decision, according to a statement. The judgement was also predicated on the findings of a fact-finding committee that examined corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
After Nazmul Hassan, the nation’s sports minister under the Awami League government, resigned, the sports ministry appointed Faruque as one of its two directors on the BCB board on August 21, 2024. The directors chose Faruque to be the BCB president that same day.
The other sports ministry delegate on the board was Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, who also signed the letter of no confidence. Aminul used the same route to enter the BCB. Aminul became a director first when the sports ministry added him as one of its members on the board. He was then voted board president by the other nine directors.
Aminul will remain in office until the upcoming BCB election, which is anticipated to happen in October of this year. He has taken a leave of absence from his position as a Melbourne-based ICC development manager.
