Sergej Jakirovic appointed as new Hull City coach with the Bosnian joining the Championship side from the Turkish league.
Hull City have appointed Sergej Jakirovic as their new head coach on a two-year deal.
The 48-year-old Bosnian, who briefly served as manager of Kayserispor in the Turkish Super Lig, has joined the Championship team.
After barely avoiding relegation to League One by staying up on goal differential, the Tigers fired manager Ruben Selles last month.
Jakirovic, who was only named head coach of Kayserispor in January, departed the team by mutual consent on Sunday. He has managed in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia.
According to a statement from Hull City, they and the Turkish team had “agreed a settlement” for Jakirovic to join the Tigers.
The team has the option to extend the arrangement for one additional year.
In 2023–24, Jakirovic, a former Bosnian defender, guided Dinamo Zagreb to the Croatian league and cup double.
But in September, two days after presiding over their most crushing loss ever—a 9-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League—he departed Zagreb.
He is the third person to take over at MKM Stadium after Liam Rosenior was fired in May 2024 after leading the East Yorkshire team to a Championship seventh-place finish.
Tim Walter, a German, was fired in November after the Tigers finished in the bottom three.
Despite clinching second-tier survival with a draw at Portsmouth on the last day, Spaniard Selles left six months later.
Jakirovic, who joined when Kayserispor was in the relegation zone, led the team to a 13th-place finish before moving to Humberside.
Since taking control in January 2022, chairman Acun Ilicali has appointed five managers, including him.
