Mumbai Falcons lose Mumbai T20 League final as Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals won the title at Wankhede.
Shreyas Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons lose Mumbai T20 League final.
Coming just ten days after Punjab Kings (PBKS) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 title match in Ahmedabad, this was Iyer’s second straight loss as captain of a T20 team.
After being put in to bat, SoBo made 157 runs, while Iyer only managed 12 off 17. With six wickets remaining and four balls remaining, the Maratha Royals, captained by Siddhesh Lad, reached the goal. With a best of 25 runs in five innings, Iyer finished the competition with just 62 runs.
“Don’t want to pinpoint any incident – overall, the boys were brilliant with their effort,” Iyer said after the final. “We just lost one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game, where you can’t single out anyone. It’s basically backstabbing [if you criticise someone], and I don’t enjoy that.
“It’s pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt [the players]. But when they come back next year, they’ll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort.”
Iyer’s tenure as captain has been outstanding and very successful. He led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL title in ten years in 2024 before they advanced to the IPL 2025 final and the Mumbai T20 League final. He was a key player in India’s remarkable run to the Champions Trophy championship in March of this year. He was also a part of Mumbai’s great efforts in the Ranji Trophy 2023–24 and the ensuing Irani Cup.
