ICC change two-ball rule and concussion sub protocol in men’s cricket as spate of rule changes continue off late.
ICC change two-ball rule and concussion sub protocols in men’s ODIs with these changes to be part of men’s cricket only for now.
The proposed modifications to the two-ball rule in One-Day Internationals and the concussion-substitute protocol in all formats of men’s international cricket have been approved by the ICC.
The chief executives committee approved the revised playing conditions, which were suggested by the ICC men’s cricket committee. They will go into effect on July 2 for ODIs, July 10 for T20Is, and June 17 for Test matches.
Men’s ODI matches now use two fresh balls per innings, one at each end. Two new balls will be used from the beginning of an innings until the conclusion of the 34th over under the updated playing conditions. The bowling team will select one of the two balls after the 34th over, and they will use it at both ends from overs 35 to 50.
“Readdress the balance between bat and ball” was the stated goal of this modification, according to the ICC.
The bowling side will only have one new ball to utilise for the duration of the innings if the ODI is cut to 25 overs per side or fewer before the first innings starts.
According to the new concussion protocols, teams will have to name their substitute players to the match referee before the start of the match according to the following roles:
One wicketkeeper
One batter
One seam bowler
One spin bowler
One allrounder
During the fourth Twenty20 International against England in January of this year, India substituted bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana for batting all-rounder Shivam Dube. There was much discussion at the time regarding the match referee’s decision to let Rana to substitute for him due to a concussion after he went on to take 3 for 33 in the game. Such circumstances might be avoided by designating players for particular responsibilities on the concussion replacement list.
The match referee will use the current like-for-like procedure to select a player from outside the five nominations if the replacement player also sustains a concussion and must be replaced.
