Sheffield Wednesday get transfer ban until January 2027 as a result of repeated failure to pay players’ wages.
Sheffield Wednesday hit with ban on transfer spending until January 2027.
Due to Sheffield Wednesday’s persistent inability to pay players’ salaries, the Championship team has been prohibited from making any transfers until January 2027.
After the club “[exceeded] 30 days of late payments” during the previous 12 months, the English Football League imposed what it refers to as a “fee restriction” on Wednesday. This restriction will apply for the next three transfer windows, including this summer’s. The ruling will be appealed on Wednesday.
Dejphon Chansiri, Wednesday’s owner, has also been charged with separate disciplinary actions “in respect of non-payment of player wages in March 2025 and May 2025,” according to the EFL. An impartial disciplinary commission will hear the charges.
When there is a fee limitation, a club is unable to pay or agree to pay any loan, compensation, or transfer fees in the transfer market. According to EFL regulations, the team is only permitted to sign “players not registered with another Club” or players on loan without having to pay a fee. Wednesday is already subject to a transfer ban, which prohibits teams from expanding their rosters beyond the 23 players needed to complete their schedules.
Reports state that certain Wednesday players were still awaiting payment of their June salaries this week. According to FIFA regulations, players may provide notice of their desire to break their contract with reasonable cause if they have not received their agreed-upon salary for two consecutive months in a calendar year.
Ten years have passed since Chansiri took ownership at Wednesday, and the Thai businessman’s tenure as the club’s leader has grown more contentious. In the past, there have been instances of late tax payments, a 2020 six-point deduction for violating the EFL’s sustainability and profitability regulations, and a club threat last August to ban anyone caught wearing a replica shirt to Hillsborough.
