Quincy Promes to be extradited to the Netherlands in order to serve his impending prison sentence in the country.
Quincy Promes, a former Ajax winger, has been extradited to the Netherlands, where he will be imprisoned for seven and a half years for severe assault and drug trafficking.
At the Dutch police’s request, the 33-year-old was taken into custody in Dubai last week.
In February 2024, Promes—who had been capped 50 times for the Netherlands—was given a six-year prison sentence for his involvement in the 2020 smuggling of almost a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands from Belgium.
He was previously given an 18-month prison sentence for stabbing his cousin in the knee during a family get-together in 2020, but he has not yet been imprisoned for any of the offences.
The Dutchman has since returned to the Netherlands, according to a prosecutors’ representative.
Promes has appealed both cases and denies the charges.
Before earning the first of his two stints with Russian team Spartak Moscow, Promes spent three years at Twente after making his senior debut there in 2009.
Promes spent four years in the Russian capital before joining La Liga team Sevilla. However, he only stayed in Spain for a year before joining Ajax in the Netherlands.
After returning to Spartak Moscow in 2021, he stayed in Russia for three more years until joining Dubai United in 2024.
Promes scored seven goals in 2014, the year he earned his first of 50 caps for the national team. In 2023, he received his final cap.
Where Promes will spend his time in the Netherlands is still up in the air.
