West Indies coach Daren Sammy gets fined in the aftermath of his criticism against third umpire Adrian Holdstock.
On the second day, Sammy was particularly upset by two rulings that went against West Indies: Shai Hope’s inside edge, which was excellently taken by Alex Carey, who was declared to have held the catch cleanly, and Roston Chase’s lbw, which was upheld by Holdstock despite a possibility of an inside edge. Holdstock determined that Hope’s low catch off Travis Head on the first day had not carried.
Sammy expressed his worries with Holdstock’s umpiring during the last ODI series in England following the play on the second day.
“You don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you’re wondering about certain umpires,” he said. “Is there something against this team? But when you see decision after decision, then it raises the question.”
Sammy was found to have violated Article 2.7 of the ICC’s code of conduct, which pertains to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match or any player, player support personnel, match official or team participating in any international match”.
For the level-one infraction, he was penalised 15% of his match money. Additionally, Sammy’s disciplinary record now has one demerit point applied for his first offence in a 24-month period.
Sammy acknowledged the violation and agreed to the punishment that match referee Javagal Srinath suggested. Level 1 violations are punishable by one or two demerit points, a minimum of an official reprimand, and a maximum of a 50% match fee fine.
Although there has been no discussion of a sanction against him, Captain Chase was equally scathing of the decisions in his post-match remarks.
