Montse Tomé sacked by Spain after Women’s Euro loss with Sonia Bermúdez and Iraia Iturregi to take over the reins.
When the contract of its women’s team manager, Montse Tomé, expires at the end of August, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has declared that it will not be renewed. Sonia Bermúdez, the under-23 manager, has been named to succeed Tomé. In a new collaborative model, Iraia Iturregi will support the former Spain international.
Jorge Vilda, who was fired following Spain’s first World Cup victory, was replaced by Tomé as assistant manager in 2023. Long-standing resentment flared when Luis Rubiales, the federation’s former president, kissed Jenni Hermoso during the medal ceremony, among other unacceptable acts.
The player challenged Tomé’s decision to exclude Hermoso from her first squad, claiming that it was necessary to safeguard her. She led the squad to both the 2023–24 Nations League championship and the Women’s Euro 2025 final, where they were defeated by England last month.
The federation’s board thanked Tomé for “her work, professionalism and dedication in various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the RFEF, especially during her time as the national team coach”.
Bermúdez won nine league titles and three Copa de la Reina medals while playing for Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Western New York Flash, Atletico Madrid, and Levante. He scored 35 goals in 63 games for Spain. Before leading the under-23 squad, she coached the women’s national teams at the under-19 and under-20 levels, winning two straight European championships.
Iturregi won four league titles with Athletic Club during his 15 seasons in the top division of Spain.
