Man United closing in on Senne Lammens in €20m deal with the 23-year-old expected to compete with André Onana.
Man United United close on signing Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens in €20m deal.
The 23-year-old expected to compete with André Onana.
After Onana joined United from Inter for £44.4 million in July 2023, he had a series of unimpressive performances that raised doubts about his future there. Altay Bayindir, the Cameroon international’s replacement, made a mistake that immediately resulted in Riccardo Calafiori’s winning goal after the Cameroon international was left out of the squad for last weekend’s opening-day loss to Arsenal.
Onana anticipates staying at United past the current transfer window after learning that the team has turned down offers from other teams for his services, but Lammens is now likely to put more pressure on him for a spot.
Before relocating to Antwerp two years later, the 6′ 3in Belgium Under-21s player made his senior debut for Club Brugge in July 2021. He made his debut for the team that November in a 2-0 Champions League loss to Porto. Although it is believed that this is not yet the case, sources in Belgium indicate that United and the player have reached an agreement.
Due to his participation in Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco, Onana is probably going to miss a portion of the season. On Christmas Eve, they play their first game against Gabon.
According to Ruben Amorim, having four first-team players train apart from the group and not be selected is “not a good thing.” Since the beginning of preseason, Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho have been working independently in an attempt to find a new home outside of Old Trafford.
None of the four played in United’s opening-day loss to Arsenal or were part of the team for their preseason tour. Additionally, they will not be included in the team that goes to Fulham on Sunday. Ideally, United will finalise the quartet’s departures, whether they be temporary or permanent, prior to the transfer window closing on September 1. However, Amorim is willing to reintegrate them into his team if they stay.
“I know that is not a good thing to have players in this situation but it’s clear they want to play in a different club,” Amorim said. “We try to arrange everything for both parties to be happy, so I have to try to imagine to have the training with the guys that I think are going to be the future and the other guys are training and preparing for the next chapter. When the window is closed it’s a different history,we have to receive the players and in a new life.”
