Maharaj picked in the side for the England T20i series as Jansen and Williams are also back after recovering from injuries.
After being left out of South Africa’s last two shortest-format squads, Keshav Maharaj has been called up to the T20I team for their tour of England. As South Africa sought to expand their spin base, the left-arm spinner, who is ranked No. 1 in ODIs, was left out of the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe and the T20Is in Australia. However, he has exploded back into contention and has been included with Senuran Muthusamy for the series against England next month.
Both left-arm speedster Marco Jansen and seamer Lizaad Williams make their T20I team comebacks after lengthy injury absences. Williams hasn’t played since October 2024 following knee surgery, while Jansen hasn’t played since June following thumb surgery following an injury sustained in the World Test Championship final.
After being granted permission to skip the Australia matches because to his franchise commitments, David Miller is back in the South African playing group. Miller is presently a member of the Hundred’s Northern Superchargers.
At the end of that event, all-rounder Donovan Ferreira, who is also competing for the Oval Invincibles, will join South Africa’s T20I team.
As a result, Australia T20I series legspinner Nqaba Peter, left-arm spinner George Linde, and veteran batter Rassie van der Dussen had no place. Prenelan Subrayen, an offspinner who will be tested in Brisbane next week after being cited for a questionable bowling action, has also been excluded.
“We were experimenting with the spin-bowling allrounders in our most recent T20I series, and Keshav was always part of our broader plans,” coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement. “His return to the squad strengthens our spin options. Beyond his obvious skill with the ball, he brings calmness and leadership to the group.”
The management of the team “will continue to manage [ODI captain] Temba Bavuma’s workload in the same way we did in the ongoing series against Australia,” Conrad further stated. Despite being rested from the second match, Bavuma, who is recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered at the WTC final, played the first ODI in Australia this week and hit his eighth half-century in the format. With the series now won 2-0, he is expected to play in the match on Sunday.
