R Ashwin calls time on his IPL Career with immediate effect as he is set to explore global franchise leagues.
R Ashwin brings curtain down on ‘my time as an IPL cricketer’.
R Ashwin is no longer playing in the IPL. He announced his intention to begin investigating “the game around various leagues” on Wednesday morning on X, formerly Twitter.
At an economy rate of 7.2, he finishes as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 187 strikes. Ashwin began and finished his career with the Chennai Super Kings, the team that plays for his hometown. He previously led Kings XI Punjab (now the Punjab Kings) and played for the Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
Like his statemate Dinesh Karthik, who retired from the IPL in June 2024 and then played in the SA20 six months later, Ashwin is now able to play in other tournaments across the world. No current Indian domestic or international cricket player is permitted to participate in international T20 leagues by the BCCI. In addition to playing in other competitions when he can, Karthik now coaches Indian cricket. Ashwin, like Karthik, will need to leave the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) in order to play abroad.
Ashwin will now have the opportunity to play in the BBL in Australia, the SA20 in South Africa, the ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates, the Hundred in England, and the CPL in the West Indies, should teams be interested in his services.
