Marc Guéhi’s £35m move to Liverpool collapses after Glasner’s Crystal Palace fury.
Despite having agreed to sell the England defender for £35 million earlier in the day, Crystal Palace abruptly called off Marc Guéhi’s move to Liverpool only minutes before the transfer deadline because they were unable to find a suitable substitute.
It is believed that Guéhi was scheduled to finish the first portion of his physical in anticipation of his transfer to Anfield, and a transaction sheet was turned in prior to Monday’s 7 p.m. deadline. However, Palace chose not to approve Guéhi’s exit at the last minute because they were unable to find a more experienced replacement, even though they confirmed the £21 million purchase of France Under-20 defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse.
In heated discussions with the club’s chair, Steve Parish, on Monday night, Palace manager Oliver Glasner reportedly expressed his displeasure at the choice to accept Liverpool’s offer and reinforced his request not to sell his captain on the last day of the transfer market. After making it apparent that Palace has to hold onto Guéhi if they want to have a good season, there were even concerns that the Austrian, who guided Palace to its first trophy when they won the FA Cup in May, might resign.
Despite acknowledging after their Community Shield victory over Arne Slot’s team that he would likely need to be sold this month in order to keep the 25-year-old from being lost for free next summer, that, along with their inability to bring in a direct replacement in time, ultimately convinced Parish to tell Liverpool the deal was off.
