Dorking Wanderers make absurd goalkeeper move as 54-year-old fan signs up to play between the sticks 28 years out.
Dorking fan, 54, answers call to play in goal as club wrestles with injury crisis.
Terry Dunn, 54, will no longer spend his Saturdays lounging and watching his favourite Dorking Wanderers in the afternoon. He has responded to the Surrey club’s emergency summons and will don his well-worn goalkeeping gloves once more after 28 years of retirement, taking his spot between the sticks instead of supporting the National League South team from behind the goal against AFC Totton.
Dunn is temporarily joining the playing squad until Monday, when Dorking may bring in a new custodian and address their injury crisis. Dunn was a multiple promotion winner with numerous local clubs until hanging up his gloves in 1997. His past clubs included the now-defunct North Holmwood.
Upon signing for the Wanderers, Dunn said: “Playing in goal is like riding a bike – you never forget it. I still regularly play walking football. As a Wanderers fan, no one will be trying harder than me to keep a clean sheet on Saturday.”
The club chair and first-team manager, Marc White, added: “In an era where passion comes in low quantities, what Terry lacks in mobility, he’ll make up for in heart – and for one game, we’re just going to have to get on with it.”
Next week, supporters may anticipate the announcement of a new loan custodian who is rumoured to sign a four-week contract with the team.
