ACC resumes its pending Annual General Meeting amid the throes of all the drama and uncertainty of the last few days.
Amid Asia Cup drama, ACC reconvenes unfinished AGM.
When the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) gathers at the end of the month, the high drama of the Asia Cup—which has been unfolding on and off the pitch in Dubai and Lahore over the past several days—may now move to the boardroom. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the ACC has been rescheduled for September 30 in Dubai after being suddenly adjourned in Dhaka a few months earlier.
Two days after the planned Asia Cup final, the ACC meeting, which will be presided over by Mohsin Naqvi, the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is anticipated to be explosive due to the ongoing championship and the unresolved business from the July 24 meeting in Dhaka.
The Asia Cup has already raised enough concerns for discussion, including the handshake incident, the match referee shambles, and Pakistan’s threat of pulling out, even though the agenda for the AGM has not even been distributed. Depending on who wins the Asia Cup, who delivers the trophy, and how the ceremony ultimately goes, there might also be another scandal ready to break out.
Another consideration would be who from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be present. It makes sense that BCCI members would be preoccupied with the opening of the Women’s ODI World Cup, which starts in Guwahati on the same day. Who is chosen to represent the board at the ACC meeting will determine a lot.
Two days prior, on September 28, at the BCCI’s own AGM in Mumbai, that choice will be taken. Ashish Shelar and Rajeev Shukla are currently the BCCI’s appointed ACC representatives. Both had participated electronically in the conference in Dhaka.
The election of the ACC vice-president will be the most significant item on the agenda for September 30. Due to the BCCI’s opposition to the procedure, the issue remained unresolved in Dhaka. This time, Mubashir Usmani, the secretary general of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), is anticipated to run in the election.
