Potter facing the real possibility of sack after Palace defeat as winless run leaves mood at London Stadium mutinous.
Following a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at home, West Ham’s miserable start to the season continues, and Graham Potter will be fired.
Potter maintained that the hierarchy still supports him, although it is known that the head coach will be let off if he cannot quickly improve the team’s performance. After four losses in their opening five games, West Ham is currently in 18th place and has already begun looking for possible Chelsea manager successors.
Although the board has not yet taken a decision, the atmosphere at the London Stadium has been tense, and Potter encountered opposition from fans when his team’s losing streak at home reached eight games.
But the question for West Ham is whether there are any qualified applicants available. They are thinking about getting back together with Slaven Bilic and have spoken with Nuno Espírito Santo, the former manager of Nottingham Forest. Former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is interested in the position.
Asked if he felt the support of the board, Potter said: “Yeah, I have no reason to think not but I also understand the environment and the results. I have no complaints at all with the support that we’ve had and the support from the supporters and everyone at the club.
“Do I believe I can turn it around? Of course. I also understand it’s tough. We’re in a tough situation, there’s no getting away from that. The only thing you can do is front it up, be honest with it. We want to do better than we are and at the moment we’re not.”
Potter has struggled to make an impact and was booed after substituting Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes against Palace. “I didn’t hear anything, to be honest,” Potter said. “I understand frustration, people are entitled to their opinion. There’s nothing I can say.
“Everybody connected with the club feels that because the situation isn’t what we want. The results aren’t good, you have to face it up and you have to ensure that we’re stronger next week. It’s as simple as that.”
