Monchi set to leave Aston Villa as Emery suffers another jolt as President of football operations wants Spain return.
Monchi poised to leave winless Aston Villa in fresh blow for Unai Emery.
The president of football operations at Aston Villa, Monchi, is about to depart the team. After a stint at Roma, he rejoined Villa a little over two years ago, rejoining manager Unai Emery.
Although Monchi is a long-time supporter of Emery, with whom he worked at Sevilla, it is believed that he had long desired to return to Spain. With one league goal in three draws and two losses, Villa has a winless start to the season.
Damian Vidagany took over as director of football operations after Monchi arrived in July 2023. As part of his job, Monchi was in charge of hiring, collaborating closely with Vidagany and Emery and other employees.
Due to financial restrictions enforced by the Premier League and Uefa, the club has had difficulty recruiting during his tenure at Villa; in July, European football’s governing body fined Villa £9.5 million for breaking the rules.
From 2014 to 2021, Emery won three consecutive Europa League championships with Sevilla and a fourth with Villarreal. On Thursday, his Villa team will play their debut match in the competition under his leadership against Bologna.
