India Under-19s easily defeated Australia Under-19s in Brisbane to take a 1-0 lead in the two-game Youth Test series, driven by centuries from Vedant Trivedi and Vaibhav Suryavanshi and an eight-wicket match haul from D Deepesh.
The hosts were bowled out for 243 by quick bowler Deepesh, son of former Tamil Nadu cricketer Vasudevan Devendran, who took 5 for 45 at first. Kishan Kumar, a left-arm seamer, then contributed three wickets. No. 3 Steven Hogan’s 92 from 246 balls was the only impressive batting display by an Australia U19s batsman.
Then, in their opening innings, the India Under-19s answered with 428. The tone was set by Suryavanshi, who scored 113 off 86 balls with nine fours and eight sixes. Gujarati hitter Vedant Trivedi, batting at number four, then led the pack with 140 runs and 19 fours. After that, Gujarati all-rounder Khilan Patel hit 49 at a strike rate of 100 from No. 8 to give the visitors a 185-run lead.
Then, in their second innings, Kishan and Deepesh destroyed Australia U-19’s top order, bringing them down to 24 for 3. After that, Khilan took 3 for 19 by rushing through the middle order. Prior to Deepesh taking two of the final three wickets to finish with 3 for 16 himself, the margin was reduced by a valiant 43 from No. 9 Aryan Sharma.
