Australia’s dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has expressed confidence about making a return during the upcoming T20I series against India, despite recently undergoing wrist surgery. The 36-year-old, known for his explosive batting and sharp fielding, has been sidelined after suffering a wrist fracture during a net session in Melbourne.
Maxwell confirmed that his surgery went as planned and that recovery is progressing faster than expected. Speaking to reporters, he stated that his aim is to be available for the latter part of the India series, depending on how his wrist responds to rehabilitation. “The surgery was the right call — it gives me a real shot at playing some matches in India instead of sitting out the whole series,” he said.
The injury occurred when Maxwell was struck on the right wrist while bowling in practice. While initial scans suggested a minor fracture, doctors later advised surgery to avoid long-term complications. After having his cast removed, Maxwell began light mobility drills under the supervision of Cricket Australia’s medical team. The all-rounder has now resumed basic fitness work, including running and shadow batting, with a gradual increase in intensity planned over the coming weeks.
Australia’s selectors have reportedly kept a close watch on Maxwell’s recovery. Although he was not included in the initial squad for the first two T20Is, the door remains open for him to join from the third match onward if he proves his fitness. His inclusion would bolster Australia’s middle order, which has occasionally struggled with stability in his absence.
Maxwell’s comeback carries additional importance for the team’s preparation ahead of next year’s ICC T20 World Cup. His ability to clear boundaries, bowl crucial overs of off-spin, and contribute as a senior presence in the field makes him a valuable asset in any playing XI. Team management is optimistic that even a partial participation in the India series will help him regain rhythm before the domestic Big Bash League (BBL) begins.
The timing of Maxwell’s recovery is also significant given his recent form prior to injury. He had been in strong touch during Australia’s home limited-overs fixtures earlier this year, often changing games with his aggressive middle-order hitting. With the India tour expected to test Australia’s adaptability to spin-friendly conditions, his return could provide the team with both flexibility and experience.
Physiotherapists have reportedly designed a specific schedule that allows Maxwell to gradually reintroduce batting drills, fielding throws, and bowling rotations without overstraining the wrist. The next two weeks will determine whether he can resume full training before the India series begins.
Despite the injury setback, Maxwell remains upbeat. “You never want to miss cricket, especially against India,” he said. “But the focus now is to come back stronger, contribute in whatever role I can, and be ready for what’s next.”
If his recovery stays on track, Glenn Maxwell’s return could provide a timely boost for Australia — both strategically and psychologically — as they aim to challenge India in one of the most anticipated white-ball series of the year.
