Ross Wilson appointed as Newcastle sporting director and will take over the post that was vacated by Paul Mitchell.
Ross Wilson, the chief football officer of Nottingham Forest, has been named sports director of Newcastle United.
Wilson succeeds Paul Mitchell, who took over for Dan Ashworth with the Magpies and left after less than a year.
Omari Hutchinson’s £37.5 million summer signing from Ipswich was Forest’s largest expenditure under Wilson, who surpassed their transfer record multiple times.
Wilson has previously served as Southampton’s director of football operations and Rangers’ sports director.
He said: “Newcastle is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters.
“I’ve been in regular contact with [manager] Eddie Howe and the trust, cohesion and alignment we’re building already feels strong, and we believe that being united as a team will be so important as we continue to move the club forward together.”
For Newcastle, Ross Wilson’s arrival is extremely important.
Despite the requirement for a sporting director during a taxing transfer window, Newcastle has been careful to choose the proper candidate and has not rushed into the position.
They believe they have that man in Wilson, who already enjoys a positive relationship with Howe.
After a period of boardroom upheaval, Newcastle will hope the Scot will stick around long enough to see that vision through.
