SLC postpones 2025 edition of LPL.
SLC has declared that the 2025 Lanka Premier League (LPL) would not be held this year as originally scheduled. The decision was made “after careful consideration of the broader requirement of preparing well in advance” for the T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host next year, according to a press release from SLC.
Originally, the 2025 LPL was scheduled to take place in three locations—Colombo, Kandy, and Dambulla—between November 27 and December 23. However, SLC has now made the decision to postpone the competition until a later date so that they may “full focus on ensuring comprehensive venue readiness ahead of the World Cup.”
Since the 2026 T20 World Cup is scheduled to start in February, SLC first believed that the later timeframe would better fit their purposes. The last two seasons of the LPL were played in July and August.
There are currently discussions to add a sixth team to the LPL. Five teams from Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Dambulla, and Jaffna participated in the first five tournaments. Jaffna Kings, the tournament’s oldest team, participated in its second edition, and Colombo Strikers were fired by SLC earlier this year for “failure to uphold contractual obligations.” Consequently, there are presently no franchise owners in the LPL with a history that goes back past 2024. The Jaffna and Colombo teams have not yet revealed their new owners.
