The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a landmark sports infrastructure project — a ₹500 crore international-class cricket stadium in Coimbatore. The new facility, estimated to cost between US$60–65 million, is set to transform the city into a major sporting hub in southern India. Built across roughly 30 acres, the stadium will feature a seating capacity of 25,000–30,000, seven high-quality pitches, advanced sub-surface drainage, and state-of-the-art player, media, and VIP amenities.
The project is being developed through a partnership between the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). It will follow a public-private partnership (PPP) model, allowing a private developer to finance, construct, and operate the stadium for several decades before handing it back to the state. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2025 or early 2026, pending final approvals and tenders.
This stadium will be Tamil Nadu’s second international-standard venue after Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, giving the state a broader capacity to host global cricket events. Officials described it as a “game-changing investment” — both for the sport and the regional economy. The design draws inspiration from world-class venues such as Australia’s Optus Stadium and India’s Narendra Modi Stadium, combining functionality with a strong focus on fan experience.
The stadium blueprint includes seven playable pitches to support multiple matches and training sessions simultaneously — a major upgrade for the region’s cricketing infrastructure. It will also feature an advanced sub-air drainage system capable of rapidly clearing rainwater, ensuring minimal delays during matches. Alongside the core sports infrastructure, the plan includes a commercial complex housing restaurants, retail spaces, and parking facilities, designed to make the venue economically self-sustaining throughout the year.
Strategically located near Coimbatore International Airport and major road networks, the site was chosen for its accessibility and potential to attract both national and international traffic. Coimbatore, traditionally known as a manufacturing and educational powerhouse, is now being positioned as a growing sports destination. The state government aims to leverage the city’s strong transport links, urban infrastructure, and youth demographic to build a sports ecosystem that extends beyond cricket — including athletics, football, and events-based tourism.
Officials expect the project to generate thousands of jobs during construction and operational phases while spurring investments in hospitality, transport, and real estate. Once completed, the stadium is expected to host Ranji Trophy games, IPL matches, international fixtures, and concerts, adding to Coimbatore’s profile as a dynamic urban centre.
This initiative forms part of Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to boost sports development and infrastructure across the state. It also reflects the government’s intent to decentralize top-tier sports facilities beyond Chennai, distributing opportunities and visibility across multiple districts.
If the project meets its timeline, Coimbatore will soon stand alongside India’s elite cricket venues — a symbol of Tamil Nadu’s sporting ambition and a testament to how regional investment can fuel national sports growth.
