Harry Kane’s late leveler saves Bayern Munich blushes and preserves unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season.
Despite a late equaliser by Harry Kane against Union Berlin, Bayern Munich’s unprecedented winning streak since the beginning of the season is over.
Before Saturday’s Bundesliga match, they had the best start to a season of any men’s team from the top five European leagues with 16 wins in 16 games across all competitions.
However, this late draw cost them the opportunity to tie a club record most wins at the beginning of a Bundesliga season.
Danilho Doekhi’s attempt after a corner went unnoticed by custodian Manuel Neuer, putting Bayern behind.
This was the first time this season that they have fallen behind in a game or given up a goal in the first half.
But Diaz’s third goal in two games quickly erased Union’s lead, and it was a tremendous effort.
In three touches, Diaz kept the ball in play on the byeline, nudged it past the defender on the spin, then sent a stinging attempt in at the near post from the narrowest of angles after Josip Stanisic’s slide rule pass appeared to be going out.
When Kane unintentionally headed a Union free-kick directly into Doekhi’s path, who finished past Neuer, it typified up an abnormally quiet afternoon.
However, the England captain made amends in the 93rd minute by scoring his 13th Bundesliga goal of the year after heading in from Tom Bischof’s cross.
Bayern will return from the international break with a home match against Freiburg on Saturday, 22 November (14:30 GMT), while Union will travel to Hamburg to play St Pauli on Sunday, 23 November (16:30).
